Since its grand reopening in late April 2024 after renovation, Jinan's Baihuazhou Cultural Block in Lixia district has become a magnet for history lovers. Over the recent Qingming Festival holiday, the historic precinct welcomed nearly 40,000 visitors, pushing cumulative footfall past two million—a personal best for the block.

Strolling through its 7,000 square-meters, visitors encounter a harmonious blend of tradition and modernity. Over 40 intangible cultural heritage (ICH) workshops, including national-level crafts like cloisonné, Lu embroidery, and shadow puppetry, line its narrow lanes. Creative markets buzz with handmade jewelry, incense-making stalls, and youth-led startups—six of which are run by recent graduates. Ms. Guo, a hanfu enthusiast, spent six hours taking photos and praised the area's ''ancient scenery, serene waterscapes, and effortlessly chic boutiques that fuse tradition with trend''.

Chen Xuedong, deputy director of Jinan Ancient City Conservation Center, attributes this success to strategic planning, ''Baihuazhou's focus on ICH integration and cultural innovation aligns with national heritage preservation policies.'' The block's synergy with nearby Daming Lake has further amplified its appeal. Revenue has soared to 20 million yuan (approximately $2.76 million), fueled by souvenirs, artisanal foods, and experiential zones like DIY perfume studios.

''Baihuazhou skipped the post-renovation 'rebuilding phase' entirely,'' Chen notes, crediting its location, policy support, and merchant collaboration. As spring blossoms frame its courtyards, this cultural hub stands as a testament to Jinan's thriving fusion of heritage and modernity.
