On August 13, the Lixia district library kicked off its Traditional Culture Summer Camp, a vibrant three-day event designed to immerse children in Shandong's traditional crafts. The program features hands-on experiences with shadow puppetry, Weifang kites, flower dough figurines, coarse cloth, Luban locks, and wheat straw paintings.
The camp opened with engaging sessions on shadow puppetry and Weifang kites. A local expert detailed the origins and expressive storytelling of Jinan shadow puppetry, which dates back to the late Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). Children watched a captivating documentary and had the chance to handle the puppets themselves, bringing the ancient art to life with enthusiasm.
In the afternoon, the focus shifted to Weifang kites, recognized as a national intangible cultural heritage. The instructor explained the history, unique features, and kite-making techniques, leading children through the process of painting, assembling, and flying their own kites. Safety tips were emphasized to ensure a fun and safe experience.
Parents and children alike praised the program for its rich content and interactive approach, which not only deepened their appreciation of traditional Chinese culture but also fostered national pride.
